It is SO HARD to eat healthy during the holidays...so many parties & extra activities...and while all of these extras are fun, they tend to wreak havoc on our bodies...IF we LET them! The goal is to not let the holiday parties get the best of us! One way to help with this is to take a healthy dish to pass to a party...think of what YOU need to fit into your meal plan for the day (and what you will be eating the rest of the day) and then incorporate the foods you need into your dish to pass. Short on veggies? Take a big salad, fresh veggies and dip or even a veggie casserole. Need to incorporate fruit into your day? Try a fruit salad, or fresh fruit tray. Remember that if YOU are having trouble eating healthy, chances are other are struggling as well, and they will also appreciate the healthy choice that you brought to the party...and if they don't, who cares? Remember that your focus in eating is to FUEL yourself the best you possibly can! -Sara ![]() I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say "I have a party tonight so I'm not going to eat anything until tonight...I'm saving my calories for________." This is NOT the best choice!!! "Saving calories" typically results in: fatigue throughout the day, irritability throughout the day, poor choices when you finally do eat, and overeating...which leads to feeling uncomfortable, stuffed, and regretful feelings about what you ate. I encouraged you to consider a new way of holiday eating when you have a special occasion/holiday party/celebration....
Aim to eat a well balanced meal plan throughout the day...if you plan on splurging a bit on something special that you love, aim to cut back on portions throughout the day, but DO NOT starve yourself through the day. Think ahead about what you really want to eat, and have a plan going into the special occasion as to what you plan to eat. Doing this will help you to feel better throughout the day, and will help you feel better when you are eating at your party as well. In addition to FEELING better (this is the goal, right?) your body will also FUNCTION better!!! -Sara I switched to greek yogurt several years ago when I realized how much protein there was in it compared to regular yogurt... I started buying the individual cups with flavors and found that in addition to having more protein they were thicker and creamier. For some people this takes time to get used to (the change in texture) I liked it better and my family enjoyed it (didn't complain about it- my kids love it and will eat it plain too).
I like to experiment when cooking, so I eventually bought a big container of non fat plain Greek yogurt because I had read somewhere that it could be a substitute for sour cream. So, I started using it in different recipes that called for sour cream. It seemed to work well and nobody noticed the difference. I used it in place of sour cream in Christmas sugar cookies...it worked out GREAT! I even started using it on tacos instead of sour cream. Now a staple in our fridge is non fat Greek yogurt and I rarely buy sour cream. -Sara |
